The Reality Vortex: The Black Rose

The Restaurant

Once the team had arrived back at the restaurant, Cayde followed after Zenta and Asher as they were ushered into the space while carrying Whis. The android had guided the way on Victor's carpet per Zenta's request, but ultimately chose to remain silent on the trip back. He glanced to the side at Bernkastel while she pondered over the situation, but ultimately spoke first in tandem with Brachi's statement.

"Yeah...we had some useful tech back from my world that can help the big guy recover. Not as effective as magical beans...but useful."

Whis stifled a small, pained expression while he rested back comfortably in his seat once Zenta had set him down. His eyes followed Mooli first, however, looking over the strange Saiyan woman in silence as she fetched him a bowl. His eyes left her slowly, however, glancing between the others and then back to her a couple of times. However, the angel did not speak further despite the concerned stare on his face; instead, he sighed contently to himself as the savory fumes of the warm broth and noodles reached his nostrils.

The angel inhaled deeply, taking a long and slow breath of air to calm himself. Whis still trembled, but managed to bow slightly to the side with a nod to Mooli.

"Thank you, my dear."

Like an old man, Whis leaned forward slowly as he trembled a bit. His movements were clearly strained; each shift and lift of the spoon itself seemingly taxing to the angel. Yet Whis slowly ate in the company of the others despite their pressing questions; an awkward silence befalling the room while Whis simply sat and struggled to enjoy the meal.

After a long pause and watching the angel eat for a few minutes, Cayde spoke up first with his arms cross.

"Whis...tell us what's going on. What happened?"

Whis straightened his posture slightly at the pointed question that pierced the long silence in the room, lightly closely his eyes. Once more, the angel took in a deep inhale of air, and exhaled slowly and methodically. However this time, it was if the pain and stress itself melted away completely, Whis sighing contently while he deftly reached for a napkin and lightly swabbed away any excess broth on his mouth.

"I apologize for making you wait...it has been sometime since I was able to sit down and enjoy a delicious meal like this. Seeing all of you here...along with some new faces...reminded me of when we first met. A time when we shared a home...a time when we were happier. After all that has happened...I must say that I have truly missed all of you."

He glanced around the team gathered now, the angel's expression softening in his content at the sight of everyone together. Whis then nodded his head curtly, taking another breath in to collect himself before continuing.

"It is only a matter of time before my trap is broken by their magic and strength...so I will do my best to be quick."

The angel's eyebrows narrowed slightly, his expression shifting to a neutral, dispassionate tone.

"During my time away from all of you...I sought to understand the nature of this world. There were many new discoveries to uncover...strange powers unknown to my own understanding. And while I studied this foreign land...I came to discover what I believed to be a true m͖iͨra̴̖c̃͊l̥ͬĕ̥͔."

(Everyone)

At Whis' final word, you feel a strange and distorted sensation come over you. The more your mind lingers on that dreadful word: miracle...the more disillusioned you grow with its meaning. Such hollow and fleeting praise, coming from this "angel". What should be a word to give you confidence...is nothing more than an empty lie spoken to make you lower your guard to this backstabbing r̔o͊d̬e͊̍n̤͜t̨́.

Your vision gravitates down, perhaps against your will, as you are drawn to the source of this strange sensation. All of your eyes see Bernkastel, and she feels the sensation resonating from what feels like her core. Her eyes locked forward at Whis in a piercing, wide eyed glare. Pure, unfiltered rage mounting beyond a mere tantrum. Murderous intent glowed in her eyes, the revenge in her heart boiling so intensely, you can feel your own fluttering in pain. There was no mistaking it, and you feel that need grow within you the more you stare at her. You feel the words that follow deep within yourself, but they are not heard or spoken to you.

D̊͒͌o̼̝̎ nͬ̀otͥ̿ l̢e͝t͓̲ͅ hi̖͗̾m b̠͕̾et͂ͫ͢r̠̜ͤa͝y̮̭ yo͟u̥.

The potency vanishes as strangely as it began, however. You look again, and Bernkastel is as she was before Whis started speaking. Perhaps it was nothing after all.

"-that was when I thought of my own world, and how similar the situation was. I believed my pupil needed only a friend that would understand...but that was before I realized how potent and corrupting this...Dark Energy...was."

Whis peered up at the group, however, having noticed their clear disillusion and distracted faces. The angel glanced amongst the others, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

"Is everything alright?"

Victor says "either this energy has its own will or that nonsense was our own doubts. the scary part is I have the felling it's the former." Victor seems reedy just in case someone dos something foolish.

Victor thinks as he pets the white cat "I guess it's a good thing I kept out the lucky cat."

After the shocking revelation (to him anyways), Clark still made attempts to ground Spina. “Bad opinions aside, just take a seat and wait for the others to come. At the very least you owe them that much; after all, they went out of their way to find you. Heck, Vegetto was outright concern for you! He was the first one that noticed you left!”

Spina, absentminded throughout Clark’s lecture, turned to him at the mention of Vegetto’s concern over him.

“That got his attention!” In truth, after Spina made a joke about killing the Breakers, Clark used his super hearing to determine the status of the Breakers since his ki-sensing was still beginner level. He didn’t want to pay too much attention to their conversation, rather than just focus on their movements; he had a good handle of recognizing everyone’s distant movements aside from the newcomers. Vegetto was not among them, but he didn’t want to assume the worst, so he figured he ran off somewhere to cool his head.

There was one movement that he couldn’t recognize but knew that they were fast approaching the restaurant. “Vegetto’s a hard case sometimes. Well, a lot of times, but you must understand—”

“I don’t care.” Spina cuts him off. “You swallowed his trash, but unlike you, I detested the taste.”

“Lost him… Okay, don’t talk about Vegetto.” Clark thought to himself. “Well—"

Before Clark could continue, his ears perked up at the sounds of the Breakers entering the restaurant and ushering off to the corner. Everyone had already gone and left since the tournament was over and went back to their daily activities in the city. “Hey, your friends are here. Let’s go greet them—”

To his surprise, the person he didn’t recognize was Whis. The last time he saw him was 3 years ago when the angel was teaching him the ways of Ki. The Breakers were handling him with care since he was terrible as if he was in a battle of some kind. “Whoa, Whis? What in Great Caesar’s ghost happened to you?” He rushes over there and got caught up in this strange sensation the moment Whis said the word miracle. He blinked once and was in a cold sweat.

“…. What was that?” Clark looked around before his eyes settled on Bernkastel. “Hey, this is no time to be playing games right now, you know?” He held his head because he couldn’t get a lick of what Whis said after that and assumed Bernkastel was messing around.

Spina held no reaction seeing Whis at that state. Rather, only the strange presence that appeared after Whis spoke that caught his attention. While he chose to remain silent, he stuck around to see the source of this “presence” was from Bernkastel or Whis. “Hmm…”

Bernkastel looked back at Clark with a similarly startled expression, pale with beads of sweat making bits of her hair cling to her face. "M-Me? What are you talking about, I was just..." she stammered out a clunky response, but her voice was no higher than a raspy strain, like the atmosphere held a chokehold on her. "Sitting here..."

"But I just saw you-- you had a really scary look on your face just now." Mooli pinned her chopsticks down on the table with one hand and the other balled up into a tight fist, breathing shallowly while forcing herself to not look anywhere but the table. Did Whis really not see that? It was impossible not to.

"This isn't a look, Mooli. It's my face. I'm not doing anything. Look at me right now, is it scary?" Bern tried to not sound as flustered as she looked by flattening the effect of her tone, but even aloud it was difficult to tell if she was trying to calm the two or warn them not to press her any further.

Mooli's lighthearted nature was gone for the moment and she only seemed to tense up more while she let Bernkastel's question hang in the air unanswered. Even now she could feel her heart clattering around in her chest as she decided the Witch would probably force her to look again anyway. She took in a deep, jagged breath as her gaze rose to meet the little one's.

".................... no. It's not. Sorry," she stated flatly.

Bernkastel said nothing else, eyebrows furrowed as she scanned the room for if the others looked at her the same way Mooli did.

“I mean, yeah, but you looked REALLY creepy a moment ago.” Clark emphasized. “I know you’re dealing with something heavy, and we haven’t had a proper time to address a lot of things. Vegetto, Gogeta and a bunch of stuff we need to talk about, but what’s killing Whis going to accomplish?”

The Kryptonian knows that the murderous intent wasn’t his imagination. That was real and completely unhinged. And based on what he knew of Bernkastel, it wasn’t something that was out of leftfield for her.

“How about you shut up and not assumed anything?” Spina spoke harshly. “Quit your speculating. You sound like your boy, Vegetto.”

“Huh?” Clark raised an eyebrow. “I’m not. I’m just saying—”

“I don’t give a damn. If Bernkastel wanted him dead, he’d be dead. Back off.” Spina’s eyes narrowed as glare at Mooli. Their first interaction, and Spina already have a sour impression from her. Without warning, he pushed Clark away and grabbed Mooli’s arm. “You, Kassava’s failure. Unless you’re gearing for a fight right now, don’t balled your fist.”

Letting her go, but left an impression on her wrist, Spina returned to the spot he was standing on. “Cut the crap about your little adventures. Huge gaps of your yapping got missed because of whatever we saw. So why are you here?”

Avalon felt a cold shiver run down his spine as he saw Bernkastel. This did not feel like Bernkastel, and the aura felt eerie. Every cell in his body was screaming to get away from that Bernkastel. Her glare, her voice, her words all made him tremble with fear. He could not explain it, perhaps it was Seilong’s warning of something ill to fall. Avalon held his breath, as if expecting something to happen.

But as quickly as the sensation came, it left. He felt a cold sweat roll down the back of his neck, forcing him to swallow hard. Avalon turned his head to stare at Asher and Zenta, silently reading their expressions.

What the hell was that? That feeling… Was that Bernkastel? No, it couldn’t be… Avalon turned his gaze to Bernkastel. Why would she want us to kill Whis? Is there something she knows that we don’t?

As Avalon stared at Asher and Zenta, he noticed Asher a little pale, nearly matching his expression. The boy was staring at Bernkastel with a confused look. Avalon glanced at Zenta and noticed a blank expression, as usual. Asher looked over to Bernkastel, then to Whis before attempting to speak up; however, Zenta quickly silenced him by holding a hand up.

Zenta saw the illusion before him, but something irked him the wrong way. Bernkastel wanting to kill Whis? It struck him as unusual. He slowly tuned his head to catch Asher’s body language as well as smell Avalon’s sweat. The subtle signs of people having seen the same thing went unnoticed by him. The fox chose to remain silent about seeing such an illusion, taking the pressure away from Bernkastel.

“Ah, yes, Dark Energy…” Zenta said, clearing his throat. “We were talking about that not that long ago. Seems like this Dark Energy is more dangerous than we originally assumed.”

Asher blinked, glancing between Whis and Bernkastel before leaning slightly to the Witch.

“Psst, did you cast a spell or something? It felt kinda weird…”

Victor says "The fact that I effected I think would be a good indication. Do keep in mind to me if this was the work of Dark energy was my first time dealing with it."

Victor thinks "Unless that duel has infected all those that that fought with dark energy. That reason one seems to be the most sensible to me." Victor seems ready for anything strange.

Brachi, Bara and Dielec shivered as they too felt cold shivers down their spine after Whis spoke with the word 'miracle', yet as the sensation went as soon as it came, it did leave the three confused, with Bara scooting a bit closer to Brachi as the amalgamate regained her composure as she listened to the others talking, taking a moment during her own silence to observe Spina discreetly, to see if there was anything odd about his behavior that would indicate the hold that this Dark Energy seemingly had on him.

Whis' eyes lifted first to the few that simply questioned the display they just witnessed, a genuine confusion in his stare for a moment. Yet as soon as their focus directed to Bernkastel, the confusion in Whis' stare vanished in an instant; a sobering and knowing stare turning onto Bernkastel as Whis joined the group once he knew the supposed "source". The angel did not look towards her with accusatory eyes, however.

Instead, he looked on with a small hint of clear regret; a first from the aloof and free spirited Whis. The angel watched on in silence at the exchange between Mooli and Bernkastel, offering no reprieve or interjection. Then came Spina, a strong and demanding presence overriding the debate and attempts to navigate whatever strange landscape occured.

Whis stared up at Spina for a long moment, meeting the older Saiyan's eyes. Once again, the angel's behavior changed from his normal demeanor. Rather than acknowledging a former teammate and politely answering Spina's demands as he would even if Spina were hostile, Whis looked at Spina plainly as he spent a brief moment analyzing the older Saiyan. Whis kept his stare on Spina, but left the older Saiyan's eyes as he slowly glanced down; an expression of disappointment and regret also building in his face. As if the angel were looking at a person with a terminal illness.

The angel cleared his throat, speaking out finally once more as he gestured towards Victor and Zenta; an unspoken acknowledgement that they were correct in assuming that Dark Energy was the power behind the strange phenomenon that just occurred.

"Yes...I apologize. It seems my trap wasn't as strong as I thought, and they're undoubtedly on their way now..."

Whis narrowed his eyes.

"During my time away from all of you, I had attempted to train others. Students that could perhaps...embody the dream I had for all of you. A dream shattered by Doctor Doom...but one that I still believe could exist in this wonderful place."

He glanced briefly between the others.

"But I was wrong...I failed to see the darkness in their hearts, and how corrupting this Dark Energy is. It is truly shameless for me to ask for your help since I have been absent for so long, but I cannot defeat them on my own. Their potential has grown beyond my capabilities...and I need your help to stop them."

Coella rubbed her eyes with her hands looking back at Bernkastel as her expression changed instantly, a bit surprised at her visceral reaction toward Whis. By the looks the others were giving, the little witch seemed out of character to have such strong and hateful feelings outright. What was it about this person that would cause that? She decided it wasn't her place to say anything, especially after Spina ordered Superman to drop the topic. She directed her attention now to Whis' plea for help to deal with his corrupted students.

"Mmm! what a pity. Well, as they say, nothing can quite measure up to the original!" Coella turned and flashed a smile at Bernkastel and Spina before asking her question to the Breaker's leader. "What say you, dear leader? Old students vs. the new! Does this seem like a worthy challenge for the mighty Breakers?"
