The newest chapter of Ichi the Witch dropped, and I finally caught up. Here’s my thoughts of the series since it’s still new (22 chapters so far!).
First, I’d absolutely adore the 2nd volume art of Desscaras. Love that she has her braids, which evolves into cornrows, to ponytail… love that. As a person of color, seeing that kind of care and quality for that just makes me love the manga even more. They’ve cooked.
Second, the story never feels too long or at a fast pace. It hits that right amount of information, while keeping the story forward. Never feels too overstaying or too quick if that makes sense. Ichi’s motivation makes sense, the world-building as it goes along is engaging without being too overly complicated or overwhelming. And the Magik system of acquiring is very, very good. Not every encounter feels samey—each of them has their own trial of how to defeat them other than “just punch harder”.
Thirdly, I love, love the characters. Very rare you see a work at SJ where female characters are in the front center and be badass without male characters coming in and take over. Despite Ichi’s motivations, he’s very much a noob at this Witch thing and constantly needed the other witches to help him when he gets into a splat (i.e. when he fought the God Magik and nearly got killed, and Desscaras had to save him.)
Favorite moment is how the God Magik was high on being the strongest and talking down, only to nearly shits himself when Desscaras was ragdogging him and had to get the hell out of there
All the characters are so damn good though… Desscaras is an absolute gem. Everytime she appears, she ALWAYS lying down instead of sitting up normally. She just chill like that LOL
Can’t wait for Chapter 23!! I want to see what kind of Magik they will face!
